Effects Of Sugar On Your Children's Teeth

June 6, 2022

What are the effects of sugar on your children's teeth?

At Densley Dental, your Las Vegas and Henderson area dentist, we care deeply about our patients. A shocking thing we see in the office in our younger patients is tooth decay caused by sugar. A number of studies have shown that consumption of sugary drinks and desserts leads to dental cavities. As a result of frequent snacking on sugary foods, the teeth are exposed to acids for longer periods of time, resulting in an increased risk of tooth decay. According to the American Heart Association, children between two and 18 should eat no more than 25 grams of sugar a day. Consuming more than this can harm your child’s oral and overall health.

How Sugar Affects The Teeth
There are billions of bacteria in our mouths. Regular dental cleanings, good oral hygiene habits, and healthy eating keep the bad bacteria from overpowering the good.  If a person (young or old) consumes sugar, the harmful bacteria in their mouths turn the sugar into acid that causes enamel to soften, then eats away at our enamel. As the harmful bacteria spread and overpower the healthy pH in saliva, our mouths are much more susceptible to cavities and gum disease.

How Sugar Affects The Body
In addition to causing oral health problems, too much sugar is linked to childhood obesity and malnutrition. The unhealthy consumption of sugar can result in diabetes, a weakened immune system, and a lack of energy. Sugar can also cause brain fog, which makes it difficult for children to focus in school.

Healthy Alternatives
It can be overwhelming to begin a new food journey. We've compiled a list of delicious, healthy, low-sugar snacks that your child will love so you won't have to stress about lowering your child's sugar intake.

Here are some healthier alternatives:
* Coconut and date sugar
* Honey
* Syrups – maple, brown rice, agave, treacle, golden, molasses
* Fruit

Other ways to limit your child's sugar intake include:

* Choose water over juice and soft drinks.
* Keep candy out of the home
* Desserts are only for special occasions
