8 Halloween Dental Health Tips

October 4, 2022

As we enter spooky season, we want to make sure you don't scare people away with bad oral hygiene. We're sure you and your children will receive a lot of candy this month. Here at your Henderson dentist, we're all about indulging, but we want to make sure you also have a healthy Halloween.

Keep your oral hygiene healthy this Halloween with these tips:

1. Moderation is key: Instead of a full candy bar, encourage your child to eat fun-sized candies. They have the same amount of flavor but smaller portions have half the sugar and calories.

2. Stay hydrated: Water is not only great for your health, but also for your teeth and mouth! By drinking water, sugar is washed away from teeth rather than clinging to them. Additionally, it balances out the unbalanced pH levels in your mouth caused by sugar.

3. Consume candy in moderation: Make sure your child does not eat his or her Halloween candy all day. Have them eat a few pieces with lunch or dinner instead.

4. Candy that is sticky or chewy should be avoided: Sticky candies like gummy bears, caramels, and taffy stick to your teeth and are difficult to remove even with regular brushing and flossing. It is best to avoid these candies, since they can remain on the teeth for long periods of time and cause more rapid decay.

5. Anything sour should be avoided: Tooth enamel is severely damaged by sour candies because of their acid content.

6. Try chewing sugar-free gum: After eating candy, chewing sugar-free gum increases saliva flow, which helps wash away acids and bacteria.

7. Candy that lasts should be avoided: The hard candy and lollipops that you give your child last for a long time in their mouths because they take a long time to dissolve. This gives bacteria plenty of time to turn sugar into acid.

8. After eating candy, brush your teeth as soon as possible: The best way to prevent cavities is to brush your teeth regularly. To prevent harmful bacteria from spreading, have your child brush their teeth immediately after eating candy.
